I dont think this has anythinig to do with USB cords.
From the description it appears that these is some issue with the connectivity at the ISP(internet service provider)'s end.
Can you call them when such a thing happens and check what their customer support has to say about this?

No, it won't make a differenc whether you use USB or Ethernet. Both work just fine.

In your Internet Explorer, click on file at the top left of the Internet Explorer window and look at the drop down menu to be sure that Work Offline is not checked. If it is, the click on it again, and it will be unchecked. You should also click on tools, internet options, and settings and make the setting be Every Visit To The Page, plus you can delete your offline content if you never use it anyway because that is part of optimizing Internet Explorer so that it works faster. Try those, and if they don't work, go to www.microsoft.com and check to see if someone else had the same problem and you might get yourself an answer that way.

You might have something corrupted in the files too, and you can fix that by re-downloading Internet Explorer from Microsoft if you can't find any other answer, and if it still does it after that, call up a computer shop to see if they can help. If your computer is still under warrantee, you can get online help too or find the answer in the help section of Internet Explorer.
