For example, would I get in trouble if I bought a fake Louis Vuitton purse if I knew it wasn't real?

Actually IT IS illegal to knowingly buy a knockoff product. I found this out trying to sell on ebay what I thought was a genuine LV bag I bought years back. A gal emailed me telling me it was fake and I am trying to remember what web site she directed me to, but it was all about how to tell a real LV from a fake, (mine was fake and I cancelled the sale) and told how Al Queda and other terrorist organizations put out these fakes to sell to raise funds for their nefarious deeds. So don't buy a fake or sell a fake.

nope

however, if it has "Louis Vuitton" trademark on it, trouble could be brewing for the seller.

No, you would not get in trouble, but you would be supporting someone who is stealing from the maker of the true brand.
