It was around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is one of the most visited tourist places in INDIA. Its in Tamil Nadu State in Southern India. Ita about 38 mile away from the states capital town Chennai (formerly Madras). Mamallapuram in CIrca 6 th cen was a bustling sea port of the Pallava kingdom who ruled from Kanchipuram. This beautiful town situates on the eastern coast of india facing Bay OF Bengal. The town is famous for its Rock and Granite Carving and Sculptor inudtry. One if interested can join rock carving courses in this town. The 7 th century shore temple and much older five Rathas and other monuments are must see. Visit in Jan feb so you will be able to enjoy Pongal Festival as well as the Dance Festival. Regular Buses From Chennai town will take you there in about two Hours Time.

The name has been changed to "Mamallapuram". The distance from Chennai is 80 Kms. From Koyambedu (Chennai) bus terminus you will get regular bus service. There is no train service for Mamallapuram.

place is about 90 kms from Chennai, you can go by bus that is available frequently.
