I'll just give you my top three, in no particular order:

Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
Terminator 2: Judgement Day

If you say that T2 is sci-fi and not really classified as action, sub in Top Gun and we're good to go.

The greatest action film of all-time is Hard Boiled directed by John Woo and starring Chow Yun-Fat. It was described by a critic I knew as "Die Hard on steroids." The final shoot out lasts 45 MINUTES. Yup, I'm not kidding. Every time I have seen it in a theater the opening gun battle in the tea shop gets standing ovations.

It's a heart stopper. Try to watch it on the biggest screen you can find.

there is always Hamburger Hill. although in case you've considered the movie you should study Harold Moore's e book, "We were squaddies once, and youthful". It covers the first Air Cav contained in the first and 2d battles of the Ia Drang Valley. After interpreting that i will guess you've 2d concepts about sending any of you young ones off to warfare.
