Im 12 weeks pregnant (YEAAA) and my Doctor is asking my husband and I if we want to do a cystic fibrosis screening. Doesnt sound like any big deal, just more blood to be drawn but my insurance doesnt cover it and it will cost us $237.00.
Money is not really the issue, we just not sure if this test is necessary. Any advice??

Cystic Fibrosis is a severe disability that shortens children's lives, though some are now living to adult ages. They can be very ill a lot of the time, though you should do your own research, as mine is a bit old.

If you think you might consider abortion rather than giving birth to such a child, you need the test.

If you would not consider abortion, but would choose to have the child no matter what, the test can help you prepare for the unfortunate circumstance of your child having the illness.

The things that can help you decide whether or not to spend the money would be how common or rare CF is and whether there is something in your family history that caused the doc to offer it.

It was not available when I had my kids, but personally, I would have saved the money as it wouldn't have affected my choices during pregnancy.

If there's not a history of it in your or your husbands family, ask the doctor what the chances are of the baby having it. If they are minimal then don't worry about it. If there is a history on either side you may want to get checked out just to be on the safe side.

It usually runs in your family. My sister has it.I'd say no if neither of you have it in your family..go back about 5 generations if you can..it hits my family every four. You can only get it if you and your partner are carriers for the disease.
