I have started a business and would like to promote it via less costly advertising and I thought that it would be a good idea to hang flyers about my business on utility poles around the neighborhood. I am affraid that this might be illegal and subject me to criminal/civil penalties.

Different cities have different ordinances for this. Check with your local city hall.

I'd be honest. It's illegal but many get away with it because a Telephone pole is private property but can I suggest something and I hope you don't get offended.

You have a business, but what do you think of a business you see plaster with flyers on a telephone pole? Usually not a very serious business.

Set your self apart from the rest. Your logo, your business must work hard in raising the bar of self image. People put flyers through people doors but that's why such mail is called a junk mail.

So let's have now solution. How about putting a suit on, have a brief case, business cards etc, and start networking with fellow entrepreneurs who also have families, friends who will need your service. By building a partnership, you have mutal interest.

Secondly, talk to people face to face and learn about people's skills (not that you have any but life is always about learning). You will have your business growing and also enrich your life by meeting so many from diverse background.

See what the crowd of business do wrong. Flyers, plastering everywhere and out of 100 flyers, 1 person will call. Why not go to the people, network in organisations, get them to know you and your services. Let them see the person behind the business.

You'll get a better result by people knowing you. People don't care about what you but how much you care so looking after even just one customer will spread the word like fire.

no, don't do it, absolutely not. while it might feel good and even fun and funny at first, it will come back to haunt you later. figure it this way, karma has a way of repaying deeds both good and bad. so far you have done nothing wrong, but the flyer thing will send waves of bad karma back in your direction and also put the possibility of you ever getting back with your husband never an option. look, he's a guy, guys do stupid stuff for physical reasons and then later regret it. she's only a kid, she has no clue what she's doing or why she's doing it. so they are both stupid, acting irresponsibly. you have the higher moral ground. keep it that way. do not lower yourself to acts of slander or libel or littering just to feel some justice. justice will be well served later, when karma comes back to bite your husband and his little missy in the butt. hold your head up high and act like a lady. you can and will love again. you might even get your husband back, but if you do this silly thing, you will look like a demented person. be a lady. let karma work it's magic and go on with your life knowing you are blameless.

It is not illegal.

However, if you do decide to post flyers, do NOT use nails, staples, etc. Nails and staples are sharp and can tear the protective clothing that the linemen wear when they climb the utility poles to check on the wiring. Any flyers you post should be secured with tape.

I'd check with the local utility company, it's their pole. , Ppl are always sticking garage sale signs up there. It's not considered littering until it comes off the pole onto the ground.

It depends on which city you are in...in general utility poles are considered city property and as such, posting flyers can be construed as defacing city property. However, unless a person calls the local police department to complain about it, they aren't going to do anything-cops have bigger crimes to solve.

In most towns it is illegal. It is usually a matter of local ordinance, possibly state law in some cases.

On a practical level, if it is a short term posting, and you collect them after your short-term promotion is done, you are less likely to aggravate the authorities -- but ...
