Soap

Drink plenty of water. (so your pores don't dry up)

Wash your bed sheets no less than once a week. (so that gunk doesn't get on your face)

When you try out a new face washing routine, I think it's normal to break out for a few days. I usually just wash my face with soap and water and then apply a light face lotion. I notice sometimes when I feel like applying face astringent I start to break out, but if you stick with the routine, my face starts to clear up. I read in a magazine that this is normal because your face is getting rid of the impurities and dirt but that in a couple of days your face should get use to it.

I don't have skin that gets very.. zit-y. However, if I use a face wash that has soap in it (sulfates.. look at the ingredients), after a few days I will get a zit or two. So I use St. Ive's Facial cream/make up remover. I pretty much never get zits, but I don't know if this woudl work for someone who has acne. I think the sulfates just make the skin work too hard at trying to replenish it's healthy amount of oil, so it biuld up.

You break out not because of how you wash your face but because of how you dry it. Your pores open up in warm/hot water as you clean them. When you're done you rub your face with a towel and fill them full of gunk. Instead of rubbing your face dry, gently pat it dry.

if you are breaking out because your skin is sensitive to cleansers, I'd try aveeno balancing bar facial cleanser. I had very sensitive skin due to taking medication at one point and this left it soft and smooth. It's hypoallergenic as well.
