Sunshine...I think I might have an answer. 20% of women can tell when they are ovulating. Women usually ovulate mid cycle or two weeks after your last period. Your ovaries switch off producing eggs. One month your right ovary and the next month your left. How long do these pains last? I believe it takes about a half of a day for an ovary to expel an egg. It took me forever to figure this one out. I always thought I was having an appendix attack or something. BUT...I was just ovulating. Hey...if this is what is going on it can be a great method of birth control. Due to the fact that you are only fertile when you ovulate. AND...you know when you ovulate because it freaking hurts. LOL....

It depends how old you are. If you are young 12-15 years old and just starting to ovulate it can be very painful. I had to take my daughter to the emergency room for this. It is common when girls begin to ovulate since the egg literally bursts through the follicle and bleeds.
If you are in your child bearing years you could be pregnant, have polycystic ovaries, fibroids or endometriosis.
Sometimes abdominal pain can result from spastic colon, irritrable bowel syndrome,etc... Go see a gynecologist to rule out any problems. It could be simple pms pain or something more serious.

it may be your kidney or your liver. Do you ever have a yellow hue to your skin or eyes?

If they are excessivly painful or they seem unusuall in any way you should see a doctor. you may have a problem with one of your organs, you could have a kidney stone or you could just be experiancing simple cramps... you can never know for sure unless you see a doctor.

You are releasing an ovule in your ovaries... This happens at least two weeks before your period... Don't worry it's natural process of your body..

If they are in the lower back it could be your kidneys working overtime from dehydration, drink water.
