Possible causes: Plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, heel spur, stone bruise, fracture, peroneus tendonitis, retrocalcaneal bursitis, heel pad atrophy, tumor.

For an accurate diagnosis - see an orthopedic specialist who specializes in feet.

The AAFP has a nice website on heel pain:

My family used to say it was a 'stone bruise'. It meant a deep, very painful injury that didn't show bruising on the outside. If your pain went away in three days or so, it might have been self-resolving injury. Take care!

It could be bone spurs. And yes they can be very painful. Get some foot padding's for inside your shoes that helps.

It might be what's called foot spurs. I've had them before diagnosed by a foot doctor and got cortisone shots.
