I've been playing the game Oblivion for a while, and it seems that closing the gates is not really nescesary. Is closing the Oblivion gates optional, and just an oportunity to gain experience, or do they become mandatory later in the game.

you havent got far enough yet. they are mandatory, about 8 of them to advance, and some only open once the quest is activated.....

teh one in kavatch and the one at the end of the game are the ones that u have to do.But the other gates u dont have to close although the sigil stones are sumwhat good although i just enchant weapons with soul gems.Anyways its better to close off the gates for a quest close to the end of the game where u need some guards from a ll the other places to help in the foght to protect bruma. All u have to do is close a bunch of gates for each place. Also if u do then the gaurds will hold off some of the daedra that come out of the gates at bruma.

No there is a mission that you have to close some for help to defend Bruma. You need to close them to get allies but the allies don't help do anything. And you do not need to close the gates other than the ones in missions. At the end of the game the last mission after you beat it they all get closed anyway

No they are not mandatory. I havent beaten the game but like 50 hours in, ive only closed about 10, and thats just for fun. You do however get Sigils that you can use to imbue your items with magical power. Some of them have pretty sweet powers. But, if you dont wanna bother then it wont hurt you at all.

only 2 are very mandatory. the one in kvatch at the beginning and the one in bruma at midpoint. before you do the bruma gate, you have the chance to enlist help from other cities for the bruma defense, by closing their own gates. it is not necessary, but you may want to.
