at first i thought he was dead but then there are some clues that point to two possibilities, that Dumbledore's not really dead, or at the very least, that Snape's not really a Death Eater, and he killed Dumbledore because Dumbledore ordered him to, as part of a grand plan
i found this site and it got me thinking that Dumbledore is not really dead. and there are some really good clues that support the fact.
here are some:
1. when they were in the tower, Dumbledore froze Harry but Harry was already invisible to their attackers and in no danger. ---The only explanation could be that Dumbledore already knew, had already planned, that he would die this night (or appear to die), and not only did he not want Harry to become involved and possibly be injured himself, he needed Harry to be a witness, to be able to tell everyone else what happened.
2. While Dumbledore is trying to talk Draco out of killing him, Dumbledore proposes an interesting way out for Draco.
Dumbledore then offers to expand his mother in the protection, and even Lucius when he gets out of Azkaban.
Draco doesn't take him up on it, but Dumbledore is saying he has ways that could make it appear that Draco died when he really hadn't.
3. also in Quidditch Through The Ages J.K. Rowling writes as Dumbledore:
"She [Madam Pince] suggested several alternatives, such as telling the people from Comic Relief U.K. that the library had burned down, or simply pretending that I had dropped dead without leaving instructions. (QttA pg viii)"
Not only does J.K. mention fire in this passage she also very clearly describes Dumbeldore himself suggesting faking his own death.
those are just 3 of many clues that suggest that he isnt dead.
here is the site were i got this from

Dumbledore is so dead. He was blasted with the killing curse and fell of the astronomy tower. Come on people, did you read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or not? I felt that the chapter about Dumbledore's funeral was written with such passion and closure.. It would be extremely cheap if J.K. Rowling were to come back in book seven and be like, "Gotcha, everyone! Dumbledore's alive and here do pilot Harry's adventure for him! Sorry for making all of you hardcore fans upset!" If Dumbledore were to come back in the last book of the series, I would be very disappointed. Harry needs to go out on his adventure by himself.
If you are not convinced, here are some other reasons:
1. If Dumbledore did not die, why didn't Snape from breaking the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy? Snape would die if he broke his promise to protect Draco. If Dumbledore were still alive, that would contradict Snape's vow.
2. What do you say about Dumbledore's portrait? J.K. Rowling specifically mentions a portrait of his being hung in the office with all the previous headmasters and headmistresses. In the Potterverse, they are only of dead people.
3. JKR PRACTICALLY SAID SO. In an interview by Emerson Spartz and Melissa Anelli, J.K. Rowling responded to "The wise old wizard always dies," with "That's what I'm basically saying, yes." J.K. Rowling wouldn't lie to us. If she said he's dead, he's dead.
For those of you who believe that Dumbledore is alive, you may need to go back and do some re-reading.
Also, please read the link in my sources. It is an excellent essay about Dumbledore's death from The Leaky Cauldron.

Yes Dumbledore HAS to be dead bcoz only then can Harry truly face Voldemort and kill him. Since it is only him who posesses the power to kll him, all those who could protect him(his parents,Sirius, Dumbledore) had to go. Now harry realises that the shelter of a parent's arms can no longer protect him.

I do not think Dumbledore is dead. arya19, I applaud you, those reasons are why I think Dumbledores alive. Rowling leaves all these clues right in front of our eyes. Thats why shes one of the best writers in the world, Dumbledore lives on, all we have to do is put all the puzzle pieces together.

Yes, nobody ever returned in Harry Potter, not even Sirius or Harry's parents. And I'm sure that he is going to be the next one to leave! It has to be an ending!

I'm guessing, yes.
I can't see why J.K. would kill him off, which ultimatly was to the benifit of Harry, and possibly kill of Harry also in book 7
Guess we will find out for sure on 07/07/07

1) *Dumbledore
2) He was hit with a killing curse, so yes. Some people believe that there'll be some sort of twist and he'll come back, but I doubt it.

the jury is still out there.
some say he scarified himself and died but others believe he will come back (gandalf style)
I honestly don't know. but since he was a human i suppose he's dead for real (that is in a book)

I'm afraid so. He was killed by an unforgivable curse, and at the end of the book they were burying him.
