My best friend's little brother had to have a hemispherectomy because he had very bad seizures, so now he is learning to do everything with only one half of his brain. Because I know how serious being mentally diabled is, I hate it when people use the term loosely. Can someone explain why people say those words in the wrong context. And same with people saying that is so "gay." How is homosexuality used as an insult?

P.S. Sorry this is in the entertainment section, but more people are on there.

I actually know people who really do act like that, but still it shouldn't be used loosely. But I guess it will get those people to stop and think every now and then. Still, I wish people wouldn't say that stuff.

well both of those words are on Jesus of Suburbia so are you insulting Green Day?? If so you just shattered my pride!!! If not then it's because people can and if they have the right they will and even if they don't thay still do it!!!

Homosexuality is used as an insult because gays are different and as saying that is so gay you would mean something insulting about wouldn't you???

Because it's easy to get their point across using the term.

If one says someone is "retarded", it conjures up a certain image. If one says that same individual is "messed up" it's a different picture.

They are directing the listener in their perception of the individual being criticized.

You can dislike/disagree with it all you want.

Some people just have a limited vocabulary and it's easier to use insulting and derogatory terms, than to speak with good sense.

I am disabled myself and it really peeves me off when they say those things. I think they say it because they arent sure how to react when they come across a person with a disability. I am not sticking up for those people who say it by any means, but thats the best answer i can come up with

Because, individual tragic stories notwithstanding, it's generally considered not a good thing to be non compos mentis. It's just another way of calling someone stupid.

Well I think in my opinion that when people use these terms it is because they lack better words in their vocabulary and to some extent are not very educated.

1. Because they can
2. Because they have no verbal creativity
3. Because they have been called those names far too much.
4. Because they never truly experienced those words literally.
