``Our country's unique because our dissidents have a voice,'' said Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, a World War II veteran who lost an arm in the war and was decorated with the Medal of Honor.

``While I take offense at disrespect to the flag,'' he said, ``I nonetheless believe it is my continued duty as a veteran, as an American citizen, and as a United States senator to defend the constitutional right of protesters to use the flag in nonviolent speech.''

I am as conservitive as they come,,, and I compleatly agree with the senitor. This is one issue that is used over and over to rally the base and it is not even a good issue.

You can not protect the flag by deminishing the rights it symbolises.

It is a real shame that some people have to desecrate the flag by burnings etc. "BUT" I have to agree with the Sen.

It is considered a part of free speech and if there is a ban placed on flag desecration, what will be next?

Personally, I am against desecrating the flag but I also treasure my rights as an American citizen and I will not give them up easily.

Today the issue was a ban on the desecration of the flag...Tomorrow, will it be a ban on free speech all together?

Where will it end? This Government ought to get back to the business of the USA's real issues...Economy, Unemployment, Price Of Gas, and so on!

I think it is a shame that we as Americans would even want to burn the flag. What exactly does it say, u hate America..well, if they hate it so much then leave. The flag is something that is a old deep root of the first Americans, trying to better the lives of all. Yes, things have changed, but we as Americans can change it. Vote, protest, do something to better America not to disregard it. And its funny, we never burn other countries flags. Its wrong.
And to the Veteran Senator, nice political strategy. My Father is a Vet and he thinks "Burn my flag and I'll kick your A**"

I completely agree with Senator Inouye. Political speech should be protected, especially in this time of governmental abuses and turmoil and invasions of our financial and other privacies.
What a waste of time for the Senate to even work on this. Why aren't they addressing the huge costs of Iraq (a war we can't win), social security, universal health care just to name a few!

There are a lot more important issues to be discussed and acted upon who cares about this? The flag is a symbol it's not the country. If you disrespect the flag the country will not cease to exist.

My dad and two brothers fought for the flag.Dad in WWII and brothers in Viet Nam. If they saw someone around there house burn the flag they would probley kill them with there bare hands and I would stand right behind them. The senators that voted against it can kiss where the son don't shine.

Just because Inouye lost an arm and got a medal doesn't make his opinion any more valid than anyone else's.

His service history makes him an expert in one thing: what it's like to lose a limb. Anything else, and he's no better than me or you.

Just another ploy to keep the peoples attention off whats really important. The flag is just a piece of cloth , it's the people that really count.

I couldn't agree more!!!!!!!! I don't believe that it is good to burn the flag but it would be worse if it was made illegal. This is a land of freedom and any law against this kind of expression would be tragic; ESPECIALLY tinkering with the Constitution

Why are they wasting their time on this drivel when they have real business to take care of??

I am a whole more enraged by immigrants legal or otherwise marching through my nation's streets waving another nation's flag. That's my definition of treason.

What's yours??
