Theres all sorts of theories going around from being in Purgatory to existing in some powerful beings artificial reality...
Myself, I heard a theory from a friend that I really like but don't know if it would fit. She says that the survivors are linked up to a machine and are trying to find a cure for a disease that's threatening to wipe out humanity. They don't know thats why they are there are that they are on a machine (well maybe the others might) though and the survivors all carry the necessary skillsets to find the cure. This would explain the lists that the others all seem to have with various candidates on them for whatever reason. Various people keep mentioning a sickness which we never quite get to see. There also seems to be some kind of a drug bein taken by various people on the island. The button transmits all the data within a certain window. Maybe the flashbacks are false memories designed to engineer thier actions as there do seem to be quite a few unlikely coincidences in them and several websites have sprung up pointing out various symbolic anomalies in some of the flashbacks.
Maybe the black cloud is some kind of manifestation of the disease.
Theres lots of ways you could fit this explanation into the show if you tried but the same can be said of most of the other theories floating around as well....
Who knows...

My original theory, from the beginning, was that they are all dead but I've heard that one denied by the new producers. (It's a whole different team running the show than originally and much like, Twin Peaks, they appeared to be making it up as they go along.) Who knows? Still a great show!

My husband & I love 'lost'! I want to buy the whole series and watch them all at once to put peices of the puzzle together. But I think that Michael and Walt are in for a lot more trouble than they think. And that whole thing with the giant magent drives me nuts. I can't wait for next season to start.

I love the show. I DVR every episode so I can go back and watch them again and again. I have my sister and her family hooked on the show also.
I hate making predictions, because then when I'm wrong (which I usually am), I don't look so stupid.
I just enjoy it for what it is......great, fascinating television with characters I can feel a connection with, because their lives are screwed up as much as our's.

definitely not a dream......have some theories... somehow all connected crazy scientist kind do some kind of social experiment and stumbled onto some magnetic healing power of the island.. maybe even onto the next evolution of people...what going with Walt....being into to places at once.......creating things with his mind...

yup. at one point i thought they were sent to the island because some of them have special talents & esp they wanting babies & children. maybe they r making a new world of special ppl but of late i'm not too sure with hurly seeing his friend from the hospital who did not exist. it's more like even though they r lost...they r found in some ways like when some of them r healed of their sickness. guess we have to keep watching to figure what it is all about!!! =)
