Very simple: because that is soccer!
Unless you are INCOMPETENT like many of the answerers, if you know about soccer you should know when a player commit obstruction in the penalty box, the other team is awarded with penalty kick! It is so simple. But it is simple for those who understand the game. The others are just INCOMPETENT and express their arrogance and frustration with comments without any logic.

He was getting tired and wanted to go home so he just gave the game to the Italians as they had more supporters in the Crowd than Aussies... safest option for him... other than that it was a dud call for the Aussies after they proved they were the better team most of the game.
