You killed the electric car. You and me and everybody that didn't want an expensive to buy, expensive to run, underpowered, short range automobile.
In the U.S. and much of the world, we buy what meets our needs and what we value and enjoy, not what somebody tells us we should like.
And besides, if you have electric cars, what are you going to use to generate the electricity? Oil powered turbines? Nuclear reactors? You gotta make it somehow.
If an electric car is ever built that is cheap to buy and operate and performs well, people will be all over it.
And people who believe that some vast conspiracy is at work are not being realistic. Remember that there are thousands of professors and their grad students at hundreds of universities working on projects related to energy improvement. No oil companies or government or secret society can silence all those people. You probably know some of them. People don't like to hear it but the truth is, there's no such thing as a free lunch. We have the systems we do because they are the most cost effective and provide most value.

Alternatives are certainly here, Chrysler is bringing out very energy efficient cars with low price tags, but no one will drive a small car, wind turbines are very effective, go look at some of the wind energy sites and see how much a person can save with one and the extra electric produced is sold to the electric company's.. Nobody needs, 5-6000 sq. ft. house, let school children learn to walk or bike to school, it is unbelievable the number of deciel stinking no control buses with a few kids riding that I see everyday. No need to have a grass yard, it is a total waste, if you need some grass then get a push real type mower and stop polluting with gas engines, (89 million of them is the U.S) . now with no pollution controls, There are alternatives staring us in the face ever day, I read just last week a University in the east has their own wind turbine which supplies all their needs and sells the balance. Brazil became independent from outside oil, so why can't we in the U.S. do all this when its starring us in the face, because to many politicians, big business and a crooked president are sucking this country dry to suit themselves, Try talking to the ones you voted for about all this and you will soon be off the list. Fox news is govenment controled so you won't get any real news there. Go to yahoo or google and ask questions and there is a bunch or really ecucational sites there, but how to get the publics attention is the problem.

It's not more mainstream because too many politicians are in bed with the oil companies.
The oil lobby groups are very powerful so politicians (some more than others) want to keep them happy.

I agree with the previous answer- there's a lot of campaign funds that are filled with money from oil companies. Politicians are afraid to endanger that in the future, so they take the oil companies' side.

Those ideas aren't dead but you can't sell them to soccer moms who are hooked on HumVees. The technology is still kind of new, as well. You can't buy a used hybrid for $500 and drive it 'cross country.
As for terrorism. Osama is in the construction business.
If some of these dimwits would get out of town they'd see thousands of windmills, too.

The energy lobbyists would rather us keep using as much petroleum as possible, and they lobby our political leaders to keep things the same. Biodiesel, ethanol, and hybrids are all viable alternative energy sources, but our government, because of big oil, isn't doing nearly enough to help them go mainstream.

Problem is Cheney and Bush wouldn't profit from windmills and solar cells, plus that remote controlled shooting gallery is just too much fun.
