Every child has potential for greatness. For some, it will not be academics. Treat them the way you would have wanted to be treated - as a very special, unique, and precious person in the Universe. You are their teacher, inspire them to believe this truth.

I agree with you that the present surroundings should not dictate future learning. Unfortunately, children from lower-income backgrounds are often lacking in exposure to intellectual stimulation that children from higher-income backgrounds are exposed to.
Children from low-income backgrounds can be given the same opportunities if their parents are resourceful. There are museums that are free or inexpensive, if you cannot afford a computer at home, take your kids to the library and teach them to use the programs and surf the internet there, read a lot of books to your kids, go to a park and collect and identify bugs and leaves.
All children are capable of great things when they are exposed to the world around them and given support and encouragement.

I think your co-workers should find another job! How dare they assume that about any child. We cannot judge someone by their beginnings. If we did, look at how many would have never succeeded. Good heavens, most people today who are successful had difficult lives and rose above all the garbage of their past.
Three cheers for you, I honor you for your ideals and hope you continue to help these children. You should become a teacher, we need people like you in classrooms.

NOT AT ALL!!! I too came from a difficult back ground. I had a difficult time in high school (I finished with a 1.8 GPA) and was labeled a "victim of circumstance." I am now out on my own putting myself through college. I finished last semester with a 3.5. If I can do it anyone can, and I am so sick of people using their past as a crutch. Popular believe seems to be that people can't do things for themselves and should be pitied and babied, and it is crippling our society. The truth is where you are in life is not due to what you were handed, it's what you are willing to work for.

Absoluty not! You are right and when those kids grow up, you will be the teacher they all remember as the one person who know they could do more and believe in them. Dont stop what your doing just because your co-works have lost faith. Keep pushing them to do more... As long as it doesn't cost any money

I teach too and I think that many times you get what you expect. If you expect little to nothing that is what you will get, but if you expect great things, wow! Can you imagine what you could get?
