DancingDudeSean tells you not to listen to the garbage... but in fact, most of these answers are based in fact. And for yet another twist on the historicity...
It was believed in medieval times that demons resided in water. Refer to the Biblical text where Jesus cast out demons and they immediately inhabited some pigs and threw themselves in some water below a cliff.
So when one would sneeze and 'release" a demon - it was indeed thought that they were blessed by God for such a redemption.
Do I believe that? heck no (not the water part anyway) - but cant change history.

Several centuries ago, a sneeze was seen as an early sign of illness and the majority of the population was Catholic and believed that blessing the person right after a sneeze would somehow prevent a potential illness. Now it's just courteous.

I don't know where it originated from, but I do have an idea. I think that when someone sneezes, to say "GOD BLESS YOU" is a courtesy. As if you saying to that person, "I hope GOD blesses you so you don't become sick from whatever it is that is causing you to sneeze!"

Every time you sneeze, everything in your body stops for that split second including your heart. Everyone knew this a long time ago, so they thought that sneezing was when someone was about to die, so they said "God bless you" to try to keep them alive longer :)
much love and peace

During the middle ages, it was believed that when you sneezed, you were physically casting out a demon. So that the demon would return to Hell, and not infest someone else, the sign of the cross was made, and the phrase, "God Bless You" was said to cast the demon from our plane.

Back in the days of peasants and servitudes it was believed that sneezing was caused by demons so when you sneezed people would say "God Bless You" in order for the demons to hurry up and escape your body.

It originated during the Bubonic Plague in Europe. When someone sneezed, people immediately said "God Bless You" in hopes that they wouldn't catch the Black Death.

From what I have heard, people used to think (long long time ago) that sneezes were your soul trying to escape or be pulled from you. Saying "god bless you" was supposed to push the soul back into your body and prevent it's escape.
I don't know if thats true or not but thats what I heard.

When the Bubonic Plague was sweeping Europe, sneezing was the first sign of it so if somebody sneezed there's a good chance they had it so...
"God bless you, because it would suck if you were to die."
