Actually you can go to the furniture store and tell them, and they can give you a cherry wood colored paint. Dab it on, and its as good as new. I know from experience!

Sometimes a dent in wood can be raised by taking a damp cloth and putting it over the dent then place an hot iron on the cloth for a few seconds. The moisture and heat will often raise the dent. Care must be taken, however, if the finish on the table is a plastic type of finish as it could turn color or be lifted from the wood. The finish can turn white. This can sometimes be fixed with orange oil. You can try the heat treatment in an inconspicuous spot first to test the finish. The orange oil can be purchased at any hardware store in the stain and refinishing section. This works best on an unfinished wood. You may have to refinsih the spot on the table if the table has a finish. It may just pay to have a professional furniture refinsiher take care of the issue. Check the yellow pages or a fine furniture store. Good Luck.

There are a couple of handy tools, you should keep in your toolbox, such as;
Pliers, an adjusted wrench, a set of allen wrenches, electric tape, a cordless-drill, a tape measure, a good hammer, a small handsaw, a plunger, a chisel, a level, duck tape, a screw driver set, a utility knife, a flashlight, and screws and nails.
Depending on what the probleum is, you can usually do the repairs your self, or if it’s too much for you to handle, ask your friends or neighbor to recommend someone to you.
Sometime it can be difficult to find a repairperson that is honest, that won’t ripe you off. Finding someone from out the phone books can be very scary too. Your repair can go very smoothly, when the right steps are taken from the get go.
As a new homeowner, maintaining your home goes with the territories. From time to time, something will go wrong like the plumbing or the electrical that can be easily repair.
Sometimes the washers in the faucets might just need to be changed, and the electrical breaker may need resetting. Door lock are common ware and tear on any home, you must be prepare for unexpected emergency when and if it happens. Be aware of the inner-workings of your home, and you will be ready for the next repair.

It can't be fixed. That's the problem with having a perfect showplace of a home. Now the poor friend will never come back. It's best to not sweat the small stuff in life. If it's really that important, buy a new one, but expect it to get used too. How about putting a bandaid over it and make a joke out of it? I'd never want to step foot in your mother's house.

It's gonna be hard to match the color for stain, but you can sand it and fill the dent w/wood putty (available at hardware store), then stain the repair to match the rest of the table.
If you go to Home Depot , Lowes or Ace Hardware, they'll help you with products to fix it.

Wood filler and stain to match the original color. Go to the hardware store and ask for help.
Edited to add: It will help to take a piece of the wood with you for color matching if there is something removable (e.g. table leg),

If it strikes and may no longer -- use duct tape. If it would not flow and may -- use wd40. This previous weekend i became on the interstate even as the seal around the front windshield all started coming off. I used duct tape to carry it in position until eventually I were given homestead. After the seal became ideal fixed in position, I used wd40 to freshen up the mess the tape had left on the metallic and the glass. LOL
