This has pretty much been nailed as far as explanation, except that your six degrees from the president, or Osama BL are pretty much useless for anything you might want to exploit them for. Turns out your only real influence is two degrees. Some network theory has tried to explain how influence spreads through a network through percolation theory and threshold theory and used this to explain fads or epidemiological patterns.
The term "Six Degrees of Separation" comes from Stanley Milgrim who gave the letters with no address to folks in Omaha to give to a guy they didn't know in Manhattan. Supposedly, of the letters that made it, the average number of hand offs was 6. Experiment was hugely flawed and failed replication by other researchers. FYI, this is the same Milgrim who got people to seemingly shock other folks in the experiment where the experimenter told the subjects to inflict shock, despite the screaming pleas from the recipient in the other room, I guess showing that people willingly harm others without hesitation when told to do so.

6 degrees of separation? That is part of a theory that you can get from any 1 person in the world to any other through connections of at least 6 people.
For example:
Uncle Kracker-Vince Vaughn
Uncle Kracker is contributing a song to the upcoming soundtrack to "My Name is Earl."
John Hiatt will appear on the soundtrack with Uncle Kracker
John Hiatt was a former guitar player for Jimmy Buffett
Buffett was a producer of the movie Hoot, which starred Luke Wilson
Luke Wilson's brother is Owen Wilson.
Owen Wilson costarred in Dodgeball with Vince Vaughn.
So:
(1) Uncle Kraker-> (2) John Hiatt -> (3) Jimmy Buffett-> (4)Luke Wilson-> (5) Owen Wilson -> (6) Vince Vaughn.

I assume your "s.............." is "separation."
This is related to the "Kevin Bacon" syndrome, popularized, I think, via the University of Virginia's mathematics/probability lab - I believe in stochastics.
The theory/law states that you are no more than 6 "people" away from someone famous. The "Kevin Bacon" theory actually states, I believe, that it's almost impossible to find more than 6 actors in any film that you can't connect to Kevin Bacon.
For example, Kurt Russell was in Tombstone with Bill Paxton who was in Apollo 13 with Kevin Bacon - so Kurt Russell has two degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. It's fun. Try it. There's a web site for it somewhere, I'm sure.
There was also a movie produced by that title.

6 degrees of separation means there are 6 common people between two individuals. For example: Bob knows person1 who knows person2 who knows person3....etc. and Bob would have 6 degrees of separation between him and person6.

six degrees of seperation? it means pick any famous person, then back track find out all the people they know and all the people you know
eventually you should find that there are six people between you and any famous person. they know some, and some of the people you know know some of the people they know and some of the people should eventually turn into one person who knows you and someone the famous person knows. Not that any of it matters.
