Three week is the minimum. If you really wanna see different parts of Australia and enjoy them, then you should stay longer. One month would be better that 3 weeks. But the longer you stay there, the more things you can see and do!
Personally, I visited Darwin & Kakadu, Cairns & the Barrier Reef, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide in one month. It was great! But I wish I could have stayed there longer.

If you only have three weeks, it might be a good idea to stay on one side of the country vs trying to see too much. If you can purchase a "stop overs" airline ticket that would also be rather beneficial.
We had two weeks so we bought a ticket which allowed us to fly to Cairns (gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Outback)
The locals pronounce that Cans, btw.
From there we took day trips up the coast and to the GBR. Absolutely as amazing as you hear - no, even more so! You must snorkel or scuba and talk about calms the size of tables for the rest of your days.
We also did a round trip sleep over to Kuranda and rain forest by train. Lots of local history and indigenious culture in the area.
Also bought an opal from a small shop owner. Australia is teeming with Opals as they are mined throughout the country. This would be where you would add the excursion to the Outback - Ayers Rock if you have time.
From there we flew to Brisbane and the Gold Coast - Hawaii's got nothing on the these guys. Very tropical sunny and "golden" beach area.
From there we flew to Sydney and toured the city, the harbour, of course the Opera House and museams.
There's also a family fun beach area across the harbour, a zoo with a platypus and wambat and indigenous animals you don't find in a typical zoo. I believe there's also a kangaroo reserve nearby. I remember walking around tons of them. It's so funny the way they sit with their tails between their legs.
We hiked through the Blue Mtns towards the end of the trip. It is amazing and the people are so friendly. It's like a small neighborhood - they hear your Yankee accent (if you are a Yank, that is)and know you are a visitor. For "a colony of convicts" as the country started, they sure know how to make you feel welcome. I took being called a Yank as a term of endearment.
Hope you have a great time- read up on the places you really want to see - their significance will increase with a little pre-studied knowledge. We hope to return some day to take in Tasmania and the western coast - Perth, or maybe even those nice folks we met from Vicotoria

It all depends on how long you want to spend doing things. My fiance and I went to Australia a few years back and we were there for nearly 2 months and I felt like we needed more time. We spent 2 weeks in the outback..camping, in swags seeing Uluru, swimming in natuarl thermal spas, spending time with the Aboriginees, etc. Then we made our way down the east coast, spent 2 weeks in Sydney, climbing the Sydney Harbour bridge, eating at trendy restaurants, shopping etc. Then we went back up to Cairns, spent a week there in a rented villa, snorkelling in the Great Barrier reef and enjoying the ocean. We did a ton more without getting too much in detail and even though we were for nearly 2 months, we didnt get a chance to see Melbourne and we didnt get a chance to visist the west coast. However, I have heard of people doing plenty during a 3 week stay. You can still visist Sydney and the Outback, you just wont be able to spend as much time doing all the little thingsm but then again, you may not want to spend 2 weeks in the outback like we did...lol. Let me know if you need any more information, Id be more than happy to help you out.

O.M.G you serious.
You need at least a month and that is still not enough.
Hot tip........ spend your weekends in the clubs and pubs, then your weeks doing the real Australia.
There is so much to see here.
Then it all depends on how easy you get bored.
I'm not saying you will be bored although after a few weeks of driving through bush it all looks the same.
You will love the outback and the city.
Happy travels.
Don't forget to visit Brisbane and its surroundings as there is a lot to see.
There are things to see all over the country but every one forgets Brisbane.

No, so much to see and so little time. Australia is such a big country it would be hard to fully take in the enormity of the country or the outback in three weeks, but if you do tell me about. I hope you have a good time.

chosse the favor outback and state you like to go, you can flight by plane to another destination, but is not cheap. oganize run trip then you maybe able to make it between 3 week. my advise is maybe you start your trip from gold coast, stay 2 night is enough then down to sydney for 4 day, take a buses to melbourne is take 14 hour but cheapest and you will see lot of nice landscape on the road, stay a 5 day in melbourne including to a beautiful outback the great ocean road, or to kangaroo island, melbourne is the most happening night life places, you will like it. after that you maybe can flight to tasmania if you like nature very much. then flight to red centre to visit ayers rock and kings canyon... that's most is the interesting places and outback in australia and not too long distance and easy to organize.

i just got back and three weeks is lot. you need a couple of days in sydney, a couple in cairns (see the great barrier reef) some time in the outback, tasmania , and to the wild animal park to pet kangaroos. theres also a blow hole in kiamo thats pretty cool and the north beach in wollongong is great. so i think you could do it in 2 but if yu have the time go for it. its a long plane ride!

Australia is a BIG country, so in three weeks, you could perhaps see a teeny weeny bit of it.
