Okay, well technically it would be Richard Petty. He retired in 1992 and holds the most amount of wins (200) and most amount of championships.
DW has the next amount of wins (84) of modern era drivers, but only 3 championships. He retired in 2000.

You omitte Dale Sr, but he would rank 2nd with 76 wins and 7 Championships..

If you talk driver's still driving it would be Jeff Gordon. He has 74 wins and 4 Championships.
Tony is the closest to coming up on that. He's got the 2 championships, but only 25 wins.

If you're talking opinionwise: my vote is for Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. THey have the numbers and can drive anything.

Just so ya'll know JR only has 17 wins. So he is so far off from being the top driver. Rusty does have 55 (which ranks him as 8th all time right now) and McMurray?? I like JMAC, but uhmm, yeah, he's only got one win, LOL.

Since you asked about modern-era drivers, I'd have to say Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Mark Martin

Have the potential to become great: Carl Edwards, Dale Jr(he's still young, people DON'T write him off!),Kasey Kahne(if they get the Dodge Charger problems under control!)

Jeff Gordon of course. No matter how you look at it. Gordon is clearly the dominant champion in Nascar during this period. I think his glory days are past, but there is no serious doubt that he is the greatest driver of the post 1990 era.

I understand Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was respectfully omitted, but I just have to say.................He's my FIRST choice.

Since he has been eliminated from this survey.....
Dale Earnhardt, Jr........is the best all around NASCAR RACER.

GO........HAMMER HEAD...............#8 "ROCKS" !!!!!!!!

(I STILL THINK DALE SR. IS THE "VERY" BEST ALL AROUND, INSIDE & OUT, UP & DOWN......'CAUSE THAT'S WHERE HE WOULD BE.........."EVERYWHERE" !!!!!

WHERE EVER HE HAD TO GO TO GET TO THE FINISH !!!!

(AND WIN............!!!!!)

A LEGEND IN HIS OWN TIME ! THE BEST !

If you are looking at stats from 1990 on I would think it has to be Jeff Gordon.
