Boil, agitate, and shock until you've reached the level of felting desired. I felt in the washing machine--some items felt in 20-30min, others took over 1 hr. There are a number of variables that impact how long the felting process will take.

It depends on several variables, such as the type of yarn, how loosely it was knit, the amount of agitation, the kind of soap in the water, if any, and the size of the item. All home felting is more trial and error than an exact science.
Plunging the item from boiling water into cold water and back will "shock" it and shrink it more.
You should keep checking, and when it is small enough, remove it and rinse in luke warm (not cold) water. Then poke it into shape and let dry.

You can do it in the washing machine. Fill it with hot water. You also need to add a pair of jeans or some towels. Add your soap and add the wool item you want felted. Let it agitate then spin the water out. You may have to fill the tub again and run it through. I recently did a felted purse and it turned out pretty good.

Instead of boiling your project, put it in the washing machine with a pair of jeans. Also, if you have a "delicates" bag, put your project in it while washing. Do not put your knitting in with a towel because the lint will "stick" to it. Mak sure to check your knitting every two to three minutes while in the washing machine. Hope it turns out well!! :)

I remember watching some show on HGTV about felting a knitted hat...from what I can recall it was an hour to two hours.
