"Fix You," by Coldplay. The lyrics and the melody blend together so well. It just makes me despair beyond words, but also comforted at the same time! It goes over what happened, something sad for sure, but then helps cure that with a brilliantly written and very inspiring song. The line, "Lights will guide you home..." is sung with just the right emotion by Chris Martin, and on the live version the crowd actually sings with him and man it is a very emotional song, especially if you are listening to it, as you said, right after a break up...

It would depend on how bitter the break-up was, and on who was to blame...

You could play "You Oughta Know" by Alanis (that's if hate has replaced love), "Cry" by Faith Hill (if you need a bit of closure and you feel that you gave more than the other person), "Take A Bow" by Madonna (if you wanna end it all with dignity), "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney (if you wanna be melodramatic), or "Tear In Your Hand" by Tori Amos (if the other person left you without a valid reason)...

the world is full of sad songs to make you cry...

Or... you can simply play "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, remember that people no longer die from broken hearts, and send them off to oblivion...

If you're a country fan, I have three suggestions:

1. "Here's A Quarter, Call Someone Who Cares," by Travis Tritt
2. "I'm Gonna Miss Her," by Brad Paisley
3. "Friends in Low Places," by Garth Brooks

And if you're a girl...
"Lesson in Leaving," by JoDee Messina

Mickey Gilley - "Make The World Go Away"

I'm not really into country music, but this one just hits the spot.

I think it was Stabbing Westward who wrote and performed it, but if memory serves, the song is called, "What Do I Have To Do." The shorthand of it is, if you can't make her happy, what do you have to do to forget her... that's the premise of it, pretty much.
