If you'd asked me before the competition started I was have said Portugal would win easily. However now that they have lost key players through suspension and Ronaldo may not be fully fit the balance has turned to England. With some of Portugals most gifted players missing I feel they will find it difficult to beat the well disciplined English defence. Sven Goran E will ensure that England are first and foremost tight at the back. I can see the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney all having a real run at the Portuguese defence, either to score directly or get a couple of the defenders into yellow card trouble. Saying that the Portuguese have talent in depth and are also quite capable of getting into good attacking position. Still I predict an England win (and a very long and boring defensive contest if England get an early goal)

I have just caught up on this thread and there is some good comments for both teams, however there is far more jibber-jibber-jibber from the Portugal supporters. It's all good banter but honestly, to keep carping on about how beautifully the Portuguese play and how controlled there are and how they don't need the suspended players!!! Well now it takes two to tango and the Portuguese chaps certainly did their fair share of thuggery in the dutch debacle, just blaming the ref for punishing them is a little churlish. If you cant do the time (or take the card!) dont do the crime. I haven't seen any coherant comment that the cards were given for non-fouls. So hullo stop kicking people and stay outta card trouble!! If that bloodbath was beautiful football then I have to prefer the slightly less attractive and less brutal approach. Finally I fail to see how getting half your squad booked and a couple sent off is really a good definition of "control" ?? Oh yes it was all the refs fault wasn't it...lol
Even though they have shown themselves to be a none too bright bunch the Portuguse are still a very talented side and if they can manage to stay on the pitch for the full 90 mins then it's pretty evenly matched. I still tip England but not by much!!!

Well, as a football fan, and as a critic as also, I can tell you that the team with the most possibilities to win is definitely Portugal. So much more solid than England. Better offensive football, better defense, against England, that in the past years have been defeated by Portugal a couple of times, and the last defeat of Portugal against England is far far away.
Portugal was the 2nd in the Euro2004, defeated by a Greece team, who played bad, defensive football all the tournament, everyone saw who the true champions where, or should be.

England is currently playing an ugly, de-organized footbal, where the defense take the biggest part in the game. I think it's a shame that John Terry was elected as the player of the match. Shows that they have been a lot under pressure against an Equatorian team, 39th in the fifa ranking, and I'm wondering, how does England going to make it against Portugal, which is 7th in the fifa ranking...

Funny isn't it? Seeing all the English fans saying that Portugal is going to loose by 2-0, 3-0, even 5-0 as I saw a couple of minutes ago in the news.

The reality isn´t beeing drunk, its beeing sober and enjoy the match, like the Portuguese fans do. Very pacific. I like to see them.

My bets, 2-1, Portugal, then the game of the world cup, Brazil - Portugal.

With Deco and Costinha gone it will definitely take a little out of Portugal, but they have been consistent at playing their game. England...hasn't really looked so good. But they have also managed to squeeze by. In my opinion England will need to play a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 they will need to score often and early to get the victory. Everyone see's England as a weak team (and it has shown) but if England challenges Portugal's defense they will get trampled and sent home.

It's a shame that Deco and Costinha are out this coming game but I think that Portugal is still going to take it. England has been winning, but only by a long shot. They (England) don't seem to be portraying the heart needed like Portugal.

I think Portugal is going to win even though they will not have Deco, and they might not have Cristiano Ronaldo, for me they have played better in this world cup than England look at the teams England has defeated, Trinidad and Tobago 2-0, Trinidad got robbed in the first goal, the giant made a foul, Sweden 2-2 I think Sweden deserved more and once again the English invidualities had to appear, like in the goal from Cole, and they beat Paraguay 1-0 in a bad match and Paraguay scored on themselves. Although Portugal has not played great teams they have certainly convinced me more than England, whoever wins I hope they come out and play great football because that's what we wait for every 4 years

Hmm. I've been a fan of both Portugal and England since the very beginning. Both teams have been doing great, and although Portugal has beaten England before, I have a feeling that this time it will be different. I'm a Canadian, and admittedly, I have been going for England more then any other team. Rooney and Beckham of England are outstanding players, and have good records. I have a feeling England is going to bring home the cup this year, which is definately where it belongs.

I think with Deco and Costinha and a totally fit Ronaldo, taking into account the way England are playing right now, you'd have to favour Portugal.

Looking at the current state of both teams, it would seem that England are favourites going into this game, but that means little in knockout football. I could easily see this game going into extra time, and wouldn't be surprised if Scolari decides to stifle England with a more defense Portugal lineup, trying to hit England on the break. Previous teams that tried hitting England on the break failed due to lack of skill up front, but Pauleta is a lethal finisher, so it may just work.

Ronaldo will definitely not be at 100%, and English players are familiar with him from the Premiership so will know how to deal with him. Maniche is always a threat from distance, so England must close down quickly. It should be a heated encounter, with England looking for revenge for 2004 when they were wrongfully denied passage through to the next round of Euro 2004 due to a terrible decision by Urs Meier at the end of normal time.

English England fans like me will be hoping England leave it all on the table on Saturday, and play like the Lions that the slogan on the team bus paints them out to be.

England 2-1 Portugal, no Extra Time.

The way england has been playing so far, I would say Portugal is going to win especially since England is without Owens. However Portugal is going to really miss Deco. He is the playmaker on that team, and every scoring opertunity goes through him at some point. He is the Portuguese version of Riquelme, and losing him might cost them the game. Also, the portuguese have been fouling alot, and the one area where Beckham is not overated is his free kick ability. So this game really could go either way.

I´m practically sure the portuguese are going to do it again!England is going to lose just like in the Euro 2004 and the Euro 2002...don't forget that 1986 was the last time both teams met for the World Cup in Mexico...another portuguese win!I only remember the portuguese being beaten in the 1966 World Cup semi-finals 1-2....So, even though Deco isn't playing I'm sure that the substitute "Simão" is going to do his job so well...everybody will be surprised!I bet on a 3-1 for Portugal!
