Was there any smoke? Did it make any noises? What kind of car and what were you driving at 85 Mph for?
From your description I would say it is a fuel problem. Possibly the pump or filter. But that does not answer the clicking noise. For that it could be a bad ground or burnt battery cable.
It would help if you could be a little more descriptive and re post. I hope I have been helpful.

Turn on the headlights, turn the key to the start position. If the lights go dim, check the battery and battery cables and all connections. If the lights do not dim, check the solenoid. If the lights dim or go out, the battery could be bad or the charging system could be malfunctioning. Charge the battery all the way and re-test it. If it works fine then it is time to look at the charging system. There is also a fusible link located between the battery terminal on the starter and the solenoid. This thing looks like a molded piece of plastic on the wire. You need to check for power on both sides of the fusible link.
Good luck!

Alternator. Had the same problem about two weeks ago. The battery is weak but that is only because the alternator is not charging it back up. If your gages when crazy right before it died I would bet money that a new alternator will do the trick. It's not real cheap on a newer model car but it should be cheaper than replacing the car.

sounds like the alternator. You lose power when the alternator goes, which can crap out on you fast. if your car was firing, which it was, it's not your starter. do not pay for investigative work - go to a good, highly rated mechanic. What kind of car do you have? Year and what not.

without knowing the year , make , and model, sounds like your altenator failed and didnt charge battery, your voltage got low, it may start with a jump or new battery but that wont last long, you need to find someone that can charge battery and change your altenator, if its an older car , a back yard guy/girl can do it cheap but newer/difficult cars, I'd only trust a qualified person

so many options. First check the cheap stuff, filters, oil and other fluid levels. Battery as other people suggested is not a bad idea. From there Alternator.

maybe the solinoid you can check this by shorting it out by touching a long screwdriver from the solinoid to the starter motor while the ignition is on. my hubby and i have done it before and it gets it started but you will have to keep doing it till you get a new one

The oil level could be to low or it could be your head gasket is going out. There is ton's of thing that could make that do that, it could be the ECU, wiring, spark plugs, ignition coils ( it makes the spark plug fire) bad air to fuel ratio, CO2 senser, O2 sensor, over heated, etc..

was the starter new or refurbished? It could be the cylinoid (SP?) If its just clicking then it either has something to do with battery or alternator.

If the radio and lights started to fade it could be your alternator.
