Well , if it feels like all the cylinders arent working then most likely they arent, what you've got to figure out is why, if its getting too much gas , not enough spark then you usually get black smoke from unburnt fuel, not enough fuel , and too much air( vacumn leak) then you get no smoke, but very rough idle, a 97 is new enough to have ODB2 and that will help if you can have scanned for codes, a lean condition means not enough fuel, tooo much air, a rich condition is the opposite, most other codes will be specific( temp sensor, iac motor, crank sensor...etc) no codes might just mean a tune up, or mechanical problems

I work in a GM dealership in central Minnesota and we work on all makes of cars and trucks.
The biggest things we see with most vehicles recently is bad fuel leading to clogged injectors or leaking fuel pressure regulators.
You have the symptoms of possibly both.

i would check to make sure that all the wires are on correctly as well as a wire might be crossd with another one because they have to be in the right firing order one crossed wire will put it out of wack as well as if the plugs are miss gauged

It's a Ford. I decided to never buy one again after my exploders motor failed the week after the transmission failed. The service manager at Ford told me that was normal.
