I myself am female and a firefighter, I have been for many years I am 36.... If this is the goal you have then by all means go for it. A long time ago perhaps when I began female firefighters were not the " thing" or maybe not accepted as much as the males.. as is with police officers ect.. If you are true to what you want or want to find out if it is for you.. Perhaps start yourself as a volunteer firefighter in your area,, They do provide training ect... and you will get on hand experience and a teaste of what its like...
Females are more excepted now.. as long as you can pull your own weight anf gice the respect you in fact want. I say go for it, because I have no regrets at all...

You have to have the right attitude to be a female firefighter. DO NOT become a firefighter because you think you will find a boyfriend. That is not the right reason, and you probably won't make it if that is why you become one. The age depends on where you live. I live in PA, and you can take Essentials (the basic firefighter course) when you are 16 (I think, it might be 14), but you cannot go into a burning building until you are 18. Don't let that discourage you, there are lots of things that need to be done that don't involve going into the building, you can fill air cylinders, help get food ready, help with rehab, be a runner for the Incident Commander, etc, etc. Bottom line, if you want to do it for the right reasons, GO FOR IT!! Don't expect to be treated any differently because you are a female, you should be able to do anything the boys can do. If this means that you need to start lifting weights, do it. Don't let the fact that you are a girl hold you back. I am a female firefighter (one of only 2 active females in my volunteer company), and I hope that on the way to a call, they are glad that I am on the rig, not hoping that I was a guy. If they weren't happy about it, they better tell me so that I can get to work on improving!! Anyways, be ready for a challenge, but GOOD LUCK!!

It takes the same thing for a Lady to be a firefighter as well as a man. I joined the home town Volunteer Fire Dept when i was 11 years old as a Junior Firefighter. My mom worked for Shreveport FIre Dept for 22 years as a District Chief. And im now currently been with the Shreveport Fire Dept for 8 years and i have 2 Females on my shift with me. They get treated the same as the male Firefighters do. Firefighting is a job that you have to want to do. Not a job that seems like fun and do it. It takes a special person to perform the duties that are performed on a regular routine shift. If a person "male or female" wants to become a Firefighter then do it, because the world needs a few more brave individuals to lend a helping hand!

well, if you just want to be a volunteer, the main thing you have to have the determination and the willingness to risk your life for others. Your strength and endurance will have a big impact on the duties you would preform. You will have to go through a physical fitness test to determine your strength and endurance.
As a career, Houston fire Department requires you be EMT certified (emergency medical training), the stronger you are, and more endurance will make it easier on you. But if you pass the physical training. You can still be accepted. Firefighters periodically go through training and are encouraged to build strength and endurance.
Main thing that is needed, is a love for life and the need to protect it. Your best bet is to start out as a volunteer. It will help you learn the ropes and the requirements aren't as hard and being a full-time firefighter. I have bad knees and cannot do either, but it is a lot of fun, and not sugarcoated, dangerous.
I hope this answers your question.

The same things it takes for a guy to be a firefighter.
Courage, hard work, strength, passion, and a whole lot of heart! (You have to be willing to die for a stranger.)
It's not for everybody. If you're not sure, you might not want to, but if you have the heart and the desire, then by all means go for it.
