ummm, soccermind - I think it's a bit insulting to suggest that no-one else here understands football.... How do you know?

Also I wonder what you think of the fact that the referee has gone to the press in Germany saying that he realises that he made a mistake, having now seen the video footage. I think that probably answers the question.

For now though, the Australians are out, after a spate of shocking refereeing decisions against them, and one for: the red card on Materazzi. When will the bias swing from the the 'Big' Countries??

Only those who understand about soccer know that the penalty kick WAS legittimate (obstruction in the penalty box is awarded with penalty kick). Then, incompentent continue to talk about something without any logic...
If ppl understand soccer they have to admit that even tough Australia played a good game, they were never dangerous and Italy had more chances on scoring goals. If you really watched the game without being biased, you should have noticed that Viduka should have been substituted as soon as the (illegitimate) red card was given to Materazzi. Hiddink continued to play with five midfielder (against three of Italy) that had superior possession of the ball, but they were too slow and not efficient on penetrate the Italian defense, because the only striker (Viduka) was perfectly controlled by Cannavaro. Hiddink should have replace Viduka and allowed even another striker to be on the field. So, why blame on others their own mistakes???
Extra time? In soccer does not exists "if" or "nut", but what counts is the result on the field. And the game ended 1 - 0.

Not really. If it's a dive, many players would do it in that situation, not just italy. There are alot of dives in this world cup from many teams, but because it's a goal and decides a match, and it's italy, bad reputation, so it's like so bad. But many dives in this world cup. Also why nobody is talking about the red card?
Australia did not deserve to lose that way, but italy played with 10 men with a red card which was harsh, and Australia couldn't score, italy could hold on well so they deserve something too. So saying Australia definately deserves to win or will win is not accurate. I think none of these two teams deserves to win or lose yet before overtime.

I can't believe people actually think that Grosso still dived. You can clearly see that he tumbled over the Australian defender. It wasn't necessarily a foul, but the italian player didn't dive. What the hell was the Aussie player doing anyways doing a sliding tackle in his own penalty box in the dying seconds of the game. I believed he deserved the penalty just for showing that lack of dicipline. Also, the way Italy was defending the whole game showed that Australia really didn't have a chance to score.. So it was only a matter of time before italy won the game anyways.

Soccer_mind: So you think that you are a football specialist? The Italian player DIVED it was as clear as crystal, but Soccer_mind is a soccer mind, he just knows what he is saying. If you controlled football, it will be much worse that it's now (which is not at a good level!!!) Soccer_dumb would have suited you better!

As regarding the red card - has anyone noticed that NO Italian player went to protest, and their media before the game EVEN claimed that they were playing with 12 man? The game was fixed, and to show that it wasn't they did that farce of the red card. Btw Australia had even a penalty not given for Zambrotta's hands!

I've seen harder tackles in under 7s at the local park that didn't warrant a penalty. It was a good clean tackle, the Italian fella just fell over in the best "John Wayne" dive I've ever seen. He deserved an Oscar for that performance, not a penalty. Italy with a man down were starting to show cracks in their game. I think if it went to extra time the Aussie would have eventually wore them down.

Italy did not deserve that penalty kick to knock out Australia. There was absolutely no foul, he on his own, it was a clean tackle! If the referree hadn't been a retard, Italy still would have won though had it been in extra time or in penalty shootouts.

Italy did not deserve it. If it went to extra time. Italy would have scored on a penalty right before the end of overtime. I know this because i have to the future.

I think the socceroos would have won. There hasn't been one game I've seen where they've literally lost their patience like many of the other teams and then started throwing a fit. They're determinded and I think Italy, as well as the world was shocked that the socceroos played the way they did. I think everyone just expected to cruise past the Socceroos. Fat chance... we would have beat them!
