even if you aren't sure if you want to join, you could always go through formal recruitmetn at your school (aka rush). its a great way to get to know people in the sororities and see what they are about. it isn;t mandantory that you join a sorority if you rush, so you could just go and check it out, and if you get into something you really want to be a part of go for it! bottom line, learn about rush and stuff through your school website and there are tons of good sites online (greekchat.com -check it out) this will give you a better idea about joining. about being shy- rush tends to push the shy-ness out of you, tons of little convos with a million people.... its a good experience in talking to people if nothing else. anyway do your homework and good luck!!

You need to think of what you want out of the situation, a sorority will tell you what to do, when to study, who to date, what to wear, you will have the inside track in social situations if you belong and there are more parties to go to because they have them, and socials, and teas and they expect you to go to all of them and dress just so and you usually have to do community service things to be impressive, and it can be expensive to keep up with all this, but if you are looking for a fancy job after school in a big wig corporation they will like you better if you were in a sorority, you have to do lots of stupid crap while you are pledging too. like sit out in the rain and scrape up chewing gum and on and on. If you are an independent, no one really tells you what to do unless you let your dorm room get nasty or you play music too loud or something. Ofcourse most places expect you to keep up with your classes and pay your fees etc. but they dont force you to go to parties , they did make us wear green beanie hats for six weeks because we were freshmen but even the sorority girls had to do that. Personally im not a party nut or a joiner so i told them to go sit on a stump.

You'd probably meet people, but I think it's the wrong people.
You can join various clubs to meet people, without eventually getting the STD's that are swarming in sororities and fraternities.

Your shyness will go away in a couple of weeks. After that, the laws of "study hard, party harder" applies. You'll have a great time so join!
