Question about heavy metal band singers?

Question

I took my son and his two friends to see Demon Hunter sunday at The Blues Cafe at Downtown Disney in Orlando on Sunday. There were 5 different bands, each sung 5 different songs. I was the oldest guy there; age 54. So I know different rock and roll groups over the years.

This was my first heavy metal band. Can anyone tell me WHY the lead singer SCREAMS into the mike? The music (instruments) were DEFINITELY rock and roll, and sometimes they even sang rock, but the lead singer in all 5 bands SCREAMED into the mike!
Nothing they said could be understood.

You are too old to understand. Heavy Metal is like Physics: If you don't get it by the time you are 25, you never will.
Keep in mind that you went to see 5 bands that your son wanted to see. Doesn't mean they are any GOOD. Maybe you just saw 5 bad ones. Until you find one you like, you can't tell the difference. Most metal is a combination of blues and ballads combined with distorted effects to pump up the adrenalin. Try listening to some of the old Styx and Rush albums with songs like "Suite Madame Blue" and "Working Man". Then work your way up to 'modern' noise like Demon Hunter. You might even be able to handle Nickelback's version of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" or Queensryche. And remember, there are levels of Metal: There's Rock, then Heavy Metal, and Death Metal, and Underground Metal, etc.

It's just the modern metal aesthetic these days. Think of it like this: the timbre of a scream is to singing as distorted guitar is to clean guitar. It's an acquired taste.

Interestingly, if I'm not mistaken, is a band that invests a lot in its lyrics; I think they're signed to a religion-oriented label. You'd think that intelligibility would be something they'd focus on more, right? : )

Because that is the style of some Heavy metal. The yelling is part of the rage heavy metal has at its core. It is not nice music (unlike 80s/90s hair metal which was about getting chicks).

Well to answer ur question the lead singers were singing, just in a different style that suits a different generation. Personally, i like that genre of music because it is unique and their lyrics are very deep.

that's the way music is now. you know it always changes. If you are 54, I am 57 so you must remember how parents freaked over "those long haired boys from England"

Now with the web you don't need to hear the lyrics you can look them up on a number of web sites.

yeah because that is the nature of most of the bands...they are like that and i think they would prefer u didnt understand the lyrics. I like rock but the screaming is just too much...Let them try Tool or perfect circle...much less screaming

That's because you don't like metal. lol. Those who love metal, as I do, can usually understand it all and love the sound of it. To each their own. =0)
