The first step is to wait until she/he is developmentally ready. This usually is between 6 and 12 months old.

Babies aren't *made* to sleep all night. Sleeping too long or too deeply is a risk factor for SIDS. So when you are exhausted at having ot wake up again with the baby, keep in mind that you may be saving her/his life...

It will take time hon. I know you are tired, and it seems like it will never end. But it will.

Every child is different. And some sleep through the night (a 6 hour stretch is considered sleeping through the night) earlier than others.

Do not put rice cereal in your 5 week old babies bottle. Do the research! Folks who reccomend that are functioning on hear-say, and advice that was popular 15 years ago. We now know that a infants digestive tract is not ready for solid foods until around 6 months of age. And introduction of food earlier than that can increase risk of food allergies substantially. Like I said...do the research, and ask your baby's doctor. NO pediatrician will tell you now-days to give your baby rice cereal in a bottle.

Continue Breastfeeding on demand, to establish a good milk supply. If you chose not to breastfeed, then alternate bottle feeding at night with your husband, so you can get more sleep. The best way to manage a baby who wakes frequently at night is for YOU to SLEEP when the baby is sleeping....day and night. During this time you need naps, so take advantage of your baby's nap time. :o) Make sure your husband knows this.

It is a HUGE time committment, having a baby. And the days of sleeping in are over for the next several years! LOL. I am in the same boat, but I'm on my second child, and it's a lot easier to swallow the second time around. :o) My first didn't sleep through the night till he was 18 months old. My second did it from the time she was 2 months old (but then started teething at 4 mos, and now is up 2 x's a night!). So you NEVER know. Babies come pre-programed with their own personalities!

Good luck, and congrats on the baby.

OMG I just read some of these answers and feel so lucky. My baby has been sleeping through the night since he was 2 months old. But I think its because he is so big. I have no advice though I'm sorry. Good luck I know its tireing. Mine is 4 months old and even though hes been sleeping through the night that is when I have my "me" time so I still get to bed late.

Your 5 week old is not going to sleep all night. The most you may be able to get is 4-5 hours at a time. Children at this age will wake up 2-3 times at night. But, to get the most out of one stretch of sleep, you may want to try a feeding before you go to bed.

Before you turn in at night (9, 10 or 11 o'clock), feed your baby with out completely waking him/her. This could give you an extra couple of hours of continuouse sleep. It does not always work though.

Just remember that little by little, your baby will begin to sleep for longer stretches of time. The first time they sleep all night will be the best night of your life, but it won't happen for another couple of months.

It takes a little more time. Make sure that she is getting enough to eat during the day. If she doesn't drink enough formula during the day, she will want to eat at night. it will be a hard habit to break. Some also say putting a little bit of cereal in the bottle at night helps as well. Never worked for my son, but others it does.

You're probably very tired already but please, don't expect much at this stage. If you need help, you may ask another family member to stay with you for a few weeks to help you out just so at least someone can help you 50/50 when waking up in the middle of the night.

It's not advisable to give solids to a baby at such a young age. You might find comfort in knowing that very young babies wake up easily not just because they're wet or hungry but it's the way their not so matured system copes. When there's a disruption in their systems such as breathing, they wake up to jolt their systems back up. Babies who wake up in short intervals are actually less prone to SIDS.

Your baby is not gonna sleep all nite for awhile, so plan your life around your baby. Take naps when your baby naps, and plan to be gettin up at nite.
5 weeks is too young to go more than a coule hours without eating unless your baby is just a little sleepy head.

That is a little soon to expect him/her to sleep thru. I have had 6 children and I did notice that once they hit around the 10-12 pound weight they slept thru the night. I also gave them a bottle of formula thickened with alittle bit of rice baby cereal so that their tummy was warm and full when they went to bed.

My kids are 22,18,15,9,3 and 18 mos. Believe Me I know what I'm saying!LOL! Good Luck!

Give him/her a bath with Johnson & Johnson's night time bath, a little cereal in the bottle and rock a bye baby!!! My little one who is now almost 9 takes her bath with J&J or a shower with the body wash, grabs her water bottle and its offf to bed. She has maintained the same sleep pattern as she did when she was 5 weeks old - in bed by 8...
