I see many INCOMPETENT comments (like the one from Michael B) and I am just wondering why people talks about soccer when they have no idea what the game is about!
Unless you are INCOMPETENT like many of the answerers, if you know about soccer you should know when a player commit obstruction in the penalty box, the other team is awarded with penalty kick! It is so simple. But it is simple for those who understand the game. The others are just INCOMPETENT and express their arrogance and frustration with comments without any logic.

btw: why don't you guys go to the official FIFA site and watch again the highlights of the game? You will notice that Materazzi's red card was a non-sense: on his tackle he touched Zambrotta's leg and did not touch at all Bresciano. The yellow card (dangerous play) would have been already too harsh. Then watch again the foul on Grosso: clearly penalty kick (again, only if you have some knowledge about the game).

@thx1176: You are complaining for the red card, a thing not even the italian players did, which is strange compared to the protests they did when de rossi was expelled (and that was an awful foul). The truth is that the red card was a farce so that it will make it seem like that the referee is not bribed 9which was) and what about the hands ball of zambrotta, that was SURELY a penalty for the soceroos! Italy know how to win only with bribing the referees that's the thruth!

It was totally unfair. Who cares most of Australia and quite a few over here I imagine. The Socceroo`s were robbed in my opinion.

As much as it pains me to say it, it was a good call. The Australia player didnt mean to interfere, and the Italian player could have just gone over him intead of tripping on him, but he didnt, and did trip, and as it was inside the box, thats a penalty. Totti took a solid kick, and that was the match. Its too bad for Australia. Personally, I just dont like that style of play, I prefer Messi, who late in the match against Mexico had a chance to go down inside the box, and it would have been a sure penalty, but he didnt, and kept fighting, and ended up losing the ball. Surely, that has more heart, but it doesnt get you penalty kicks. Hopefully, Ukraine will beat Italy in the quarterfinals.

I think that the socceroos made a mistake, possibly because they were tired. Usually by that time, games are more likely to be decided by who makes a mistake first. Australia made the mistake so they lost.

we were robbed and i'm sick of people telling other people to get over it. show some god damn respect guys. just because we may not be a large soccer nation doesnt mean that the socceroos should face unfairness on the field and that we're less of importance. it suprises me that the ref hasnt even apologised yet

No point in keep grieving over it.
But still, it's a painful defeat, Aussie was robbed by the ref.
(Sssssttt .... Deep in my heart, I hope someone gives that ref a good beating ... hehehe)

Have to say though, Totti's penalty kick was wonderful. I think not even the greatest keeper could catch that ball ... so strong and far up the right hand corner.

People are still crying about this game amazaing.....
there have been other games with same results and no one is complaining about them..

Two players a few feet apart a few seconds apart slide tackled the Italian players as the Italian player jumped over the one aussie player and tryin to get his balance the other aussie slide tackled him...

it was a tough call to make....

Also amazing that no one is complaining about the red card given to the other Italian player for something that only called for a warning or a yellow card..

it's over get over it

Ref made up for the hard foul on the Italian just outside the box a few minutes earlier!
