Or they don't even acknowledge that you're there? Or say something like, "There you go, you guys" when maybe one of you is a lady???

This can depend on where the store is and who owns it and who runs it. If you're talking about a fast food place, the clerk making minimum wage and has this attitude I can't blame them for putting up with crap all day long and they have absolutely no incentive other than a measly minimum wage. Now if it was a high end store wher your dropping a lot of money and the clerk is on a decent salary especially commission then you'll get the treatment you're looking for. Hopefully you are giving off the nice energy that deserves reciprocation.

No, it isn't rude. Just because you bought something from the store doesn't mean they should show appreciation. And that money you just paid them? Doesn't go to their pocket. Being a store clerk can be busy, tiring work. You deal with hundreds to thousands of people a day, depending on the business, and most of them are rude to you, whilst you restrain any urges to snap back at these people and just take it into stride. As for not acknowledging you are there...like I said, it's busy, tiring work. And ultimately, it comes down from a quote from the film Clerks: Just because they serve you doesn't mean they like you.

It may not be rude, but certainly doesn't show any appreciation for their customers, that provide for their paycheck.

I think they should be very thankful a customer makes a purchase, even for a penny. Every customer that buys something contributes to their company's profits, and therefore their paycheck.

When customers feel appreciated, they are much more likely to come back and purchase more. If they didn't feel appreciated, then why should they bother?

I suppose from an employee point of view, they may not care because it is not their company. But any good manager would fire them for not saying thank you. I would. And the ones that say it consistantly with a positive attitude toward customers, gets the good raises.

The fact is good customer service is what drives a profitable business. People can buy stuff in many places. If you want them to buy from you, thank them.

No it's not rude. What do they need to thank you for? Sure they need to acknowledge that you're there but they don't have to thank you for anything.

In fact I think the customer should say thank you, for the clerk having to patiently put up with stupid complaining customers all day long.

It drives me nuts when a store clerk is rude! Minimum wage and possibly a small commision do not give a person the right to roll their eyes at customers or pretend it is a hassle to wait on you!

well, I used to be a grocery store clerk and I personally thought it was rude of the customers to, for example, crumple up their money and throw it at me, or lick their fingers and count out their money, or dump a bunch of change on the counter and spend ten minutes counting it out, or assume it was my fault that the cheese was moldy, or it was also my fault that we don't carry the brand of coffee they like, etc, etc, etc. Then someone else comes along and tells me to smile, says I look like a sourpuss. WELL I WONDER WHY??!!

Well obviously you think its rude. Which supports my point which is, people expect some appreciation when they go somewhere and spend money, and a simple thank you is the very least that would make the grade. But is it rude? No, just sub-par service.

Yes

But there is also anotherside of the coin. Why do they behave in that manner? Maybe its due to a bad employer; poor salary, working conditions, harrasment, etc.

Sometimes, when you earn peanuts and get shouted at all day long, your manners go down the drain.

Yes,it is!!!Especially rude-if he/she speaks with such words to someone else/others-but says nothing to you...how lame is that!!?

Sometimes if they are just like that to mostly everyone-they just feel miserable and it's nothing personal.
On the other hand,if it's just towards you-they may have been distracted and/or fell into a momentary coma or something,or they could just be hating on you!!!

No. I want him to shut the hell up, take my money and give me my stuff. And if he gives me attitude, I'm likely to reach across the counter and shatter his jaw. Many of these people are such scum that I'd feel more comfortable with a robot or some automated system.
