I am amazed at the inability of the majority of people to see the hypocracy in it.
simply put
"don't tell me what to do!",
is the simplest example I can think of on this subject.

I know what you mean. I told a cop to move out of my way once and he started barking orders at me. Stupid sobriety checkpoints.

Many reasons. Your given example could simply be reactionary, especially if given by an immature person, or thought provoking when given by someone more philosophical (though not likely). It may cause you to empathise. You probably did not enjoy being told what to do, so by example, then they have shown you that they as well do not like to be told what to do.

Leaders, people in power, like to give orders not take them. Your example could be a weak or oppressed person attempting to sieze power in some small fashion.

Contemporary western culture has deified this concept of individuality. One effect of this is that many people mistakenly believe that they have leadership skills. So now everybody thinks they should be the ones giving the orders not taking them.

Well obviously, If I already know what to do I don't want to hear you tell me what to do. Additionally, since I know how everything should be done, I would like to simplify your life by letting you know the proper way to proceed.

Because they have dominant personalities and think they know what's best for everyone. I have met quite a few of those

Control. Lack of control at being told what to do, total control (in their warped minds-including mine) when telling people what to do lol, is as much as I can figure out...

if they like to tell what to do, they like to be boss and dominator So of course they dont want to be dominated. They wanna be right. The wanna be the man.

BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS WANT TO BE THE CHIEFS AND NOT THE INDIANS. THEY TEND TO BE KNOW IT ALLS. AND WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO IN A TIGHT SQUEEZE.
