What exactly is "house music" that live DJ's play? At least in California?

Is it just the music tracks without vocals? Is it a combination of hip hop, funkadelic, disco etc.?

It's kind of hard to explain--it's dance music that is upbeat, with not a lot of vocals. Usually they play popular songs that have been remixed to make them more danceable. House and techno are pretty similar. Go to MusicOne.com to get a good sampling of what you would probably hear. If you like to dance, you'd probably like it.
