I am 11 weeks and 6 days and had an appt today. She tried for about ten minutes to find the heartbeat, couldn't find it and wants me to do an Ultra Sound asap. I'm scared because I thought I was having a miscarriage this past weekend, but it was normal bleeding caused by a small blood clot in the placenta. I am really nervous!!!!

I did have an ultrasound Friday, the baby looked good, very active. Sunday I had one too and the baby wasn't moving much, but the heart was beating.

Fetal heart monitoring in the ob office is not as accurate as a good ultrasound, however, physiology dictates that the heart is one of the earliest structures to develop and fetal heat tones are evident as soon as 6 weeks after the first day of you last period (LMP). By 11+6 you ought to be able to hear heart tones by ultrasound. The bleeding may be a sign that a miscarriage occurred, or it may be the placenta shifting. Good luck!!

That feeling (nervous) can affect the baby's development. as early as 6 weeks OB can hear the baby's heartbeat using a dopler. its kinda unusual not to hear it from an 11 week old baby since it doesnt move or change position yet. however, your OBs request for an ultra sound is good and very accurate. had the same experience which leads to miscarriage. thus, it does not follow that what happened to me would happened to you also. just be sure to have that ultra sound the soonest. ill be one with you in praying for the good health of your baby.

I'm not going to say that its definately ok, but it is common to not hear a heartbeat until the fourth month in. You guys could have the date off by a few weeks, or the baby might be hiding behind one of your organs. The doctor is just looking out for the best to make sure that nothings wrong. But I believe its probably nothing major or else she would have done an ultrasound immediately or told you to go to the ER. Good luck!

by 11 weeks a fetal heart beat should be able to be detected by doppler. However, if the baby has moved around or into a position that it can not be detected you may not be able to. Also if you are a larger woman and have more belly fat it may cause problems detecting the heart beat. If the OB is that concerned I am surprised he/she didn't do an ultra sound right then and there to check for a viable fetus.

Don't worry about it...at this point, your baby is so tiny and there's no telling where she is in your uterus. If she's hiding around the back somewhere, it could be very difficult for your OB to find her heartbeat. Sometimes all it takes is a week or so, and if you go back, I'm sure they'll find it in the ultrasound.

You are so early in the pregnancy that your uterus is still down in your pelvis therefore, the fetal heart tones are harder to detect. Also depending on your size, if your are a fluffy gal, this can make it a little more difficult as well. The ultrasound will ease your mind. Do not worry, this is a common situation.

Sometimes it is hard to jear a heartbeat that soon...the Dr is right get it checked ASAP to one check on the baby and also to ease your mind. I hope you get a good result. Best of luck to you...Also you may not be as far along as you think...I was 3 weeks off before the ultrasound
