No, the Ford Ranchero first came out in 1957, the El Camino came out in 1959 till 1960, then stopped making them until 1964, and then GMC came out with the Sprint in 1971. The best thing about them is that you get the ride of a cadillac with the convienance of a truck. Check out chevelles.com/el camino, this will give you the entire history and background of all years of the el camino. Bet you can't guess what I own.

I don't ever recall seeing a "later" small Ranchero, so I suspect the '78+ El Camino to be the lighter/faster vehicle given a similar drivetrain. If you are that indecisive about Ford or Chevy (most are not) I would probably suggest the Chevy simply because aftermarket support of the '78-88 A/G-body (it shares everything but the body with the Monte, Malibu, Cutlass, Grand Prix, etc) is massive, and the small block Chev is probably the cheapest with the most aftermarket support to build up, let alone the conversions to the LS-series motors. As mentioned, some of it is going to depend on what you want, and what the laws in your area will let you get away with.

Well, the biggest difference is that the Ranchero was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, and the El Camino was manufactured by General Motors.

They are both low slung pickup trucks on automobile frames, and both originally were offered with bench seats.
