I have two very well-behaved dogs that are trained for trail running, having run several thousands of miles on trails. They do not wander off the trail or stop and bother hikers/runners. This weekend I am going running in a national forest. Once we get on the trail away from the populated parts of the park, will I have any problems if I let my dogs off their leashes?

Letting dogs run off leashes angers many people and is against the law in many places that don't have an 'off leash area'. Don't be selfish. Nobody else loves your dogs like you do. Just seeing dogs off leash can be threatening to other people and impair their ability to enjoy the park. It's not a dog run, so don't treat it like one. Respect the park and other people.

And pick up every mess they leave behind. Nothing will give you a worse rap than leaving 'surprises' for others in the area. You wouldn't want to be confronted with a human bowel movement on the trail, so don't leave your dogs'.

When we traveled through Natl Parks, CA, OR, MT, WY, SD, there were many rules posted about No dogs on trail. They could also not be left at your campsite. Not very pet friendly.

The chances are much greater that the dogs will run away than you would get a fine for it. In this case it is for the dogs protection.

Probably a hefty fine, and community service, but disobeying a leash law is a jailable offence.

Hiawatha National Forrest is very strict on the leash laws. They welcome dogs but expect you to obey the rules.

depends on the ranger.. some wont notice.. they wont really be there to notice.. but if they are a jerk off ranger.. and they catch you.. it is a huge fine, and possibility of some other stuff.. but i wouldnt worry.
