Ad hoc means "for a special purpose, case, or immediate reason." For example, an ad hoc report is one put together on short notice to answer a very specific need, or an ad hoc committee is one put together on a temporary basis to solve a specific problem.
The phrase has been extended in computer technology to mean a network for a short-term network, such as one established with wireless technology for a short session ("I linked up through an ad hoc connection at the Starbucks")
Ad hoc literally means in Latin "for (or to) this."
