most people will tell you Abner Doubleday, but he didnt. Alexander Cartwright had a hand in compiling and publishing an early list of rules in 1845 to meet the demands of the already popular sport. So Cartwright invented the organized rules. Abner Doubleday even said he made no such claim. It could have also been John Newbery. Who knows.

abner doubleday is generally accepted as the "inventor" of baseball, however there are some historians that claim to be able to predate a crude version of the game prior to doubleday. at the very least doubleday standardized the game giving it formal rules, many of which have stood up for well over 100 years.
