I am originally from Maine. And it is Beautifull. If you enjoy the snow and hiking and fishing than by all means give it a try. The winters can seem to go on forever though. And the summers are much to short. People are pleasent and most of the state has a small town feel. But the cost of living there is higher than here so be prepared for the additional cost. Also make sure your home has a wood stove for those long winters, elec is to high, and gas won't help when there is an ice storm and you lose power.

Maine is lovely in the summer, COLD and lots of snow (measured in FEET not inches) in the loooong winter. Almost the exact opposite of Texas - winter is longest, summer shortest.
I've lived in both states - currently live in Texas. The difference in people takes some getting used to - folks are kind, but not as outgoing in Maine. Down-easters treasure their own privacy and respect yours.
Try vacationing there in January and August - that will give you a good idea of what you're looking at weather-wise.

Maine can be beautiful but isolated. I lived in Portland, ME for a while and travel to the east coast of ME to visit. It is beautiful, peaceful, and great. It is also a slower way of life, the winters are VERY cold with lots of snow, the summers you get traffic from tourists. There is no main airport. There are fewer jobs there as well.
On the plus side, I loved living there. I like a slower way of life though! Portland was great - they have minor league baseball and hockey teams. I enjoyed their symphony and arts too.
Good luck!

When reading these answers keep in mind that Portland is the busy, happening part of Maine....so when they say quiet they mean it. The mosquitos are busy, as are the black flies yet it is a beautiful state. I love it but the weather is too severe for me. Visit first -- in all seasons!

I live in Maine and it is alright, depending on what town you move to. I can't wait to move out of the town I live in, cause it sucks. Maine is a very pretty state but it's full of stupid people, as I am sure most places are. I love living in Maine and couldn't imagine myself living anywhere else.

I used to live in Maine. It is a great place to visit. The mosquitos are big and the snobby attitudes are even bigger. It is better when you are away from anywhere around Portland. North of Portland is your best bet.

Around 1,274,923 people live in Maine. Much colder than Texas in January.

I'm not from Maine but went there last year. Like the rest of New England, it is astoundingly beautiful. People are very, very nice, too.

If you don't mind winters and mild summers and the trees and the quiet, you'll be good. Oh you also have the ocean and lots of lakes and did I mention quiet.
