Has this experience been more so in, say , your first job straight out of college or perhaps in an environment where you work with people from ethnic/racial backgrounds other than your own? How do I prevent these negative feelings/experiences at work from getting carried over into my personal life and family, friends and other personal relationships?

I generally don't focus on it and just work on doing a good job and being professional. I had this situation where two of the secretaries were gossiping about me and being mean to me. There are almost no women where I work, so I felt pretty isolated when they were there dishing the dirt on me. They've left now as they got 0% raises along with discussion about their poor performances and were all upset. I never made a complaint about them, but I'm sure other people probably did. I never got upset about it outside of work, because I decided that it was their problem not mine.

My advice is to ignore the stupid stuff and build up rapport with the folks who are supportive. Focus on being professional and doing a good job. Some folks who might seem cold at first can often end up being your best supporters after you get to know them.

Sometimes you have to just step back. You have a job and you're getting paid. Perhaps for a small time you need to look elsewhere for your personal satisfaction. Things go in cycles - things may improve at work. Good luck.

I feel comfortable with all my coworkers except for the managers. My supervisor scares me and she is in thick with management. I keep trying to get along with her but she intiminates me so much that I mess up constantly when I work with her. I dread going into work although I like the job in general I have a fear of getting fired because I don't fit into their little twosome.
