1. Pools are expensive to maintain.
2. Pools come with major liability - in many states you will be liable if a young child climbs over your fence and gets injured/drowns in your pool - attractive nuisance.
3. Your kids will invite kids - are you and/or your wife willing to be at pool side whenever they are there?
4. Are you prepared to install a swimming pool fence that meets your local building code - you will have increased liability and will have difficulty finding insurance without a proper fence.
5. There are only a few places in the U.S. where a swimming pool adds to the value of a home e.g. Florida and Arizona and parts of California.
6. In many parts of the U.S. a pool actually DETRACTS from the value of a home.

If you have doubts DON'T DO IT. I built pools for 35 years and can't tell you how many paople wish they had bought a country club membership instead! (It's cheaper, plus you get the tennis, golf, etc). Don't listen when they say they will take care of it. ("I'll feed the puppy, daddy"). Ain't gonna happen. Listen to the voice of experience. Only put one in if you are willing to make a commitment to live with it-- even during the non-swim months.

We have friends that got an in ground with a salt water system and a very good robot cleaner. They love it. The technology for pools has improved quite a bit and I believe they are not as labour intensive as they used to be.

Depends if you are looking for an above ground or in ground pool. In ground are much more expensive, so you might try an above ground first to see if you will like it for the longhaul. They are much easier to remove if it is not to your liking.

if you get a fair sized above ground you can always remove it in a few years if you dont use it anymore. it's cheaper than carting them to the mall, beach, public pool all the darn time!
