Okay, lets start with the question: Five times the sum of a number and two is 45. So now we need to write it as a numerical equation like this: 5 X (a number + 2) = 45
5 X (7+2) = 45
5 X 9 = 45

the number = 7

... that is the easy way...

The MORE algebraic way of finding it is this way:

5 * (x+2) = 45 then divide both sides by 5 and you get
(x+2) = 45/5
x+2 = 9
now subract 2 from both sides and you get
x+2-2 = 9-2
OR X = 7

the number is 7!
