Burning the flag is a dispicable thing to do, but aren't there more pertinent things, such as the war is Iraq, when to bring our troops home, and how to deal with Iran and N. Korea.

No. They are wasting time when there are PLENTY of more important issues at hand. And that type of amendment has been defeated twice before. I wouldn't burn an American Flag, but I'm not going to cry about it either. It's a symbol of America, not America itself. They were debating whether the symbol should be allowed to burn while real live Americans are in danger.

The only other Amendment that restricted a behaviour of the people was the 18th, and it was repealed by the 21st. The Constitution GRANTS rights to the people, and restricts behaviours by the goverment, those were the authors intentions.

Of course it's wrong to burn the flag. But the First Amendment protects your right to do it if you so wish. If a flag-burning amendment is passed, I can guarantee you it will be taken out later, just like the 18th. You can't have freedom and then say "except when..."!

While it is personally hurtful to me for anyone to desecrate the emblem of our country, I do't see it as a pressing reason to amend the constitution, a more important symbol of our democracy.

nor is it important enough to spend valuable time debating, especially whiile we're involved in two wars and on the brink of two more. We have 2518 war dead and a war debt of $418 billion and the highest deficit in history, almost 300,000 displaced New Oleanians and 40 million U.S. citizens without health care insurance.

This debate over flag burning is not a priority item.

And, if the amemdment is approved, how will we ever police it?

This is another hot button issue, like gay marriage, to distract us from the fact that we don't have universal health care or day care or reliable retirement and a tax system that overwhelmingly favors the rich.

But to answer, I think it's any moron's prerogative to burn the flag if they're so ungrateful for what this country has given them. The flag after all stands for the right of all of us to express ourselves-even idiots. But they should be requied to burn it in the presence of veterans, who could then express themselves on the flag burner.

Hell yes Congress needs to be addressing this issue. Our flag has been flying in this country for 230 years, and if someone who comes here from another country decides they don't like our policies and therefore they decide to burn our flag, I say burn them, and send their ashes back to their family as a warning. I have a huge problem with this baltant disrespect for our nations flag. My father was a US NAVY SEAL, and got shot more than once for this country, so why should someone come over here and be able to disrespect it. This is just as bad as those Mexicans in California hanging a Mexican flag above the US flag because the school is predominantly mexican, screw that.... you wanna fly your flag, take your asses home.

Ok. Unlike businesses, the U.S. government are constantly working on issues, some issues being decades old, and although some things seem more important, you cannot stop all internal affairs because of war, or the economy would de-stablize, and our government crumble.

Here's my point of view on things, I'd be happy to discuss them with you via e-mail.

Flag burning -
I hope this amendment passes and the dumba**es rot in jail...

The war in Iraq -
We haven't won yet... but we are close to it.

When to bring our troops home -
When the war is over. To pull our troops out prematurely (now) would mean the defilement of EVERYTHING THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN IN OUR ARMED FORCED GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR. Please contact me on this topic.

I completely agree.
But, what they fail to realize, is that we are not as ignorant as they would like to believe. We all know it is a distraction, to stray our minds away from the more important events, and dilemma's they have us in now.
Why would this even be a discussion?
Why not just take the damn thing down to? I mean, they have already taken Christianity out of school, out of CHRISTMAS!... Why not, go ahead and take our flag and language with it. That is what all the illegals are hoping for. Not The United States Of America..
But, The United States of Hypocrites.......

if you read yahoo's homepage news you'd see that they just rejected the notion of bringing home the troops just a few days ago...and make no mistake the decision makers don't always let YOU know what foreign policy that they are working on....and yes, in addition to discussing the flag, they ought to have kids pledge allegiance to the flag in the morning in school like they used to....and we could also pray for the screen name TOM, he needs guidance more than g. bush does...

Absolutely. This is the flag that thousands of young men and women put their lives on the line for each and every day. Many have already shed their blood for it and many stand ready to do it also.

Dude I totally agree with you, burning the flag is insulting but it doesn't hurt us. Solve this war BS and the deficit and world hunger and on and on. Save the petty crap for later.
