*chuckles* Those lines are not really there, they are simply light reflecting off the surface of the CD's layers. But there are other lines that spiral outward from the center that strore billions of 1s and 0s (called binary) that are read and decoded by the computer.

1 0 0 1 0 -> 1 0 0 1 0 -> 9
1 2 4 8 16 -> 1+0+0+8+0 -> 9

That's the music. You see, the laser is beamed at the cd and the grooves make the beam bend a certain way to make a specific sound. It's like an old record.

If I am correct, wich I think i am it is because of not only the way the light hits the reflectice surface but also becauuse of the layers of plastic on top of the reflective surface.

it is to tell you if the cd is filled up.For example look at a unburned cd then put a couple of songs on it and look at the lines then

Those arent lines. Those are just reflections.
