i like the look of the enfields.are they suitable for a first bike?

If you want to learn to repair bikes too, they're OK.
Take a look at the Triumph Classic bikes if you want a reliable bike that will be trouble free. Royal Enfields are made in India and are not well known for their reliability. The new Triumphs are pretty much trouble free modern bikes.

Royal Enfields are not owrth it more time in the shop than on the road they also ride rough as hell and have no decnt power curve

They never were cafe racers. 'Legal' for vintage racing though. (or you could build a vintage trails bike, search for 1950's/60's pics on british sites) may be able to get 30bhp on a good day. lots of fun when running
