In an attempt to invoke fear. The southern blacks were very religious/superstitious when the crosses were being burned. Nowdays, we should fear Bush's oil cartel more than a handful of impotent rednecks.

they traditionally burned the black people they killed .
a burning cross as a warning .had far more effect than a cross just put in front of the house .

people would wake up by the sound of the burning or some times shootings.

then when they saw the burning cross ,they had an idea what was coming ,and so were even more intimidated.

a very calculated manner of terror

"Supposedly" when burned during their "secret" meetings the lighting of the cross "blesses" the klan members....iheard that on the KKK:history of the klan....last night on the discovery channel
