You'll need to back them up. If you have a lot, you may find it easier to buy an inexpensive external hard drive.
Word and Word Perfect are compatible, though you may find that some complicated formatting doesn't perfectly transfer between them.

word perfect is compatible with microsoft word. The best way to insure the transition will be smooth is the go through and choose File/Save As and choose to save the file as ".rtf" or rich text format. This format is more universally acceptable through different programs and OS's.

I don't know about Word Perfect, but I know that Word2000 as a part of Office2000 can save it's documents as WordPerfect documents.

If you try to open the file with MS Word you will receive a message that it is being converted. Or you can take the long way and convert the file using Wordperfect.

the best thing is to find a tech guy they may charge some $$ but it is worth it if the infromation is valuable i learned that the hard way
